Bidirectional EV Charging in Placer County

What It Is, Why It Matters, and How to Get the PG&E Rebates

For most homeowners, the idea of using a car as a backup power source for the house still sounds like science fiction. But in 2026, it’s not just real — it’s becoming one of the smartest moves a homeowner in Placer County can make.

The technology is called bidirectional EV charging, and it lets electricity flow both ways between your vehicle and your home. Instead of your EV just being a thing you charge, it becomes a massive battery on wheels — capable of powering your house during a PG&E shutoff, storing your solar production during peak hours, or even sending energy back to the grid in exchange for credits.

At King Electric & Solar, we’re certified installers for both Tesla Powershare and GM Energy PowerShift systems, which makes us one of the very few electricians in the Placer County / Auburn area who can install bidirectional charging from either manufacturer. This post breaks down what the technology actually does, what equipment you need, what it costs, and — most importantly — what PG&E rebates are currently available for early adopters.

What Is Bidirectional Charging, Exactly?

Standard EV charging is one-way: electricity flows from your home’s electrical panel into your car’s battery. Bidirectional charging is two-way: electricity can flow into your car OR back out of it to power your home or the grid.

There are three flavors you’ll see referenced:

Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) — Your EV provides 120V/240V outlets so you can plug in tools, appliances, or campsite gear directly. This is the simplest form and doesn’t require any home electrical upgrades.

Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) — Your EV can power your house through your existing electrical panel during a power outage. This requires special equipment installed at your home and is what most people mean when they say “bidirectional charging.”

Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) — Your EV can actually send electricity back to PG&E’s grid during periods of high demand. This is the most advanced form, and California is one of the first states to make it commercially available.

For most Placer County homeowners, V2H is the immediate value. Living in fire country and PSPS shutoff territory, having a backup power source that’s already in your driveway is genuinely transformative.

Why This Matters in Placer County Specifically

We’re in a region where PG&E Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) and storm-related outages happen multiple times per year. Many of our customers in Auburn, Meadow Vista, Foresthill, and Lake of the Pines have already invested in backup solutions — propane generators, gas generators, or battery systems like Tesla Powerwall.

Bidirectional EV charging gives you a fourth option, with some unique advantages:

  • You already paid for the battery when you bought your EV. A Cybertruck has a ~123 kWh battery. A Chevy Silverado EV Max Range has up to 205 kWh. That’s enormous compared to a standalone home battery (a Powerwall is 13.5 kWh).
  • No fuel storage required. No 500-gallon propane tank in the yard, no gasoline jerry cans, no monthly fuel delivery.
  • Solar integration. If you have solar panels, you can charge the EV during the day and pull from it at night — basically using your truck as a giant Powerwall.
  • Tax credits and rebates. California and federal incentives can take a meaningful bite out of the installation cost.

For someone in a rural Placer property with a long driveway, no natural gas service, and a PG&E line that goes down four times a year, this is one of the most practical resilience investments available right now.

Why Choose King Electric & Solar for Your Bidirectional Install

Bidirectional charging is genuinely complex work. It combines high-voltage electrical service, advanced inverter logic, grid interconnection, utility permitting, and manufacturer-specific commissioning steps. Done wrong, it’s a fire hazard and a code violation. Done right, it’s one of the most resilient and rewarding electrical upgrades available today.

Here’s what we bring to the table:

  • Certified installer for both Tesla Powershare and GM Energy PowerShift — most local electricians are certified for one or neither
  • No subcontractors. Our team handles the entire job from initial assessment through final commissioning. Your home isn’t passed off to a stranger.
  • Full permit and PG&E coordination. We handle Placer County permits and the PG&E change-of-service application required for V2H/V2X installs.
  • Local accountability. We’re based right here in Auburn. If something needs attention after install, we’re 15 minutes away.

King Electric & Solar is a licensed California electrical contractor (License #1119258) based in Auburn, CA. We’re certified installers for Tesla Powershare and GM Energy PowerShift bidirectional charging systems, serving all of Placer County, including Auburn, Meadow Vista, Lake of the Pines, Lincoln, Newcastle, Penryn, Loomis, Rocklin, and surrounding areas.
