Electrical Troubleshooting in Auburn, California
Breaker Tripped But Won’t Reset?
- Short circuit: A hot wire touching neutral or ground somewhere on the circuit. The breaker will keep tripping until the fault is found and repaired.
- Overloaded circuit: Too much demand on one circuit. The breaker resets but trips again once loads are reconnected.
- Ground fault: Current leaking to ground, often from moisture or damaged insulation — common in outdoor, garage and well-pump circuits.
- A worn-out breaker: Breakers age. One that feels loose, buzzes or trips at low load may simply need replacement.
Important: never hold a breaker closed or swap it for a larger one — that defeats the protection and is a fire hazard. We trace the fault, repair it and verify the circuit is safe.
Overloaded Circuits
- Breakers that trip when you run two appliances at once
- Dimming or flickering lights when the HVAC, microwave or vacuum starts
- Outlets or switch plates that feel warm to the touch
- Buzzing sounds or burning smells near outlets or the panel
We measure actual circuit loads, then fix the cause: re-balancing circuits, adding dedicated circuits for heavy appliances, or upgrading panel capacity if your home has outgrown its service.
Recessed / Can Light Went Out
- Thermal cutoff: Recessed fixtures have a safety switch that kills power when the fixture overheats — often caused by insulation contact or over-wattage bulbs. If the light works briefly then goes dark, this is likely.
- Failed LED driver: Integrated LED retrofits have a driver that can fail long before the diodes do. The fix is replacing the trim/driver unit.
- Loose connection: A wire nut or quick-connect in the junction box backing off — especially in fixtures that cycle hot and cold.
We diagnose the fixture, and if it’s time, upgrade you to sealed, IC-rated LED retrofits that run cooler and cut energy use.
GFCI Outlet Not Getting Power
- A tripped upstream GFCI: One GFCI often protects several downstream outlets. The tripped device may be in another room, the garage, or behind boxes.
- End-of-life GFCI: GFCIs wear out, commonly after 10–15 years. If it won’t reset with power present, it needs replacement.
- Line / load miswiring: A GFCI installed backwards protects nothing and can leave downstream outlets dead.
- A real ground fault: Moisture in an exterior box or a failing appliance tripping the protection exactly as designed.
We locate the tripped or failed device, correct the wiring and bring the circuit up to current GFCI code requirements.
Electrical Outlet Stopped Working
- Half-hot / switched outlets: One half of the outlet is controlled by a wall switch — easy to mistake for a failure.
- Backstabbed connections: Builder-grade outlets wired through spring-clamp holes in the back loosen over time, killing the outlet and everything daisy-chained after it.
- Loose or broken neutral: Interrupts the circuit and can cause flickering or partial power in other outlets — a condition worth fixing promptly.
- Burned or worn contacts: Outlets that no longer grip plugs firmly arc internally and overheat.
We repair the connection properly — pigtailed and torqued, not re-stabbed — and replace worn devices with spec-grade outlets.
Our Diagnostic Process
- Listen first: When did it start, what changed, what else acts up? Good history narrows the search fast.
- Test, don’t guess: We use professional meters and circuit tracers to measure voltage, load and continuity — isolating the fault to a device, connection or cable run.
- Free panel inspection: Every diagnostic visit includes a free inspection of your electrical panel — checking for double-tapped breakers, corrosion, and signs of overheating.
- Upfront repair options: You get a clear explanation of the cause and a fixed price before any repair work begins.
- Verify and document: After the repair we re-test the circuit under load so you know the problem is actually solved.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is a breaker that keeps tripping dangerous? The breaker itself is protecting you — but whatever is making it trip needs attention. Repeated tripping on the same circuit warrants a professional diagnosis.
- Are flickering lights serious? Whole-home flickering can indicate a loose service neutral — a genuinely urgent issue. Single-fixture flicker is usually minor. Either way, it’s worth a look.
- Can I troubleshoot this myself? Resetting a GFCI or checking a switch is fine. Anything involving the panel, wiring connections or persistent tripping should be handled by a licensed electrician — in California, electrical repairs in finished walls also typically require a permit.
- What does a diagnostic visit cost? We charge a flat diagnostic fee that includes the free panel inspection, and we quote any repair upfront before work begins.
- Do you offer same-day service? We prioritize no-power and safety calls in the Auburn area — call us at (916) 597-0971 and we’ll get you scheduled.
