Tesla Powerwall Installation

Tesla Powerwall installation in Auburn and across the Placer, El Dorado and Nevada County foothills from a Tesla Certified Installer and licensed California electrical contractor. Silent, instant backup when the grid goes down, daily savings on time-of-use rates, and retrofit onto solar you already own — sized to your real loads, permitted, interconnected with PG&E and commissioned properly.

A Tesla Certified Installer in Auburn & the Sierra Foothills

King Electric & Solar is a Tesla Certified Installer — which is not the same as an electrician who is willing to hang a battery on your wall. Certification is what lets us buy, install, commission and warranty-service Powerwall properly, register the system so your warranty is valid, and configure the Tesla app so you can actually see and control what the battery is doing. We are also a licensed, insured California electrical contractor, so the panel work, interconnection and permitting are handled by the same crew rather than subcontracted out. We serve Auburn, Placer County, El Dorado County and the Nevada County foothills. For a broader look at storage options, see solar & battery storage, or compare with Enphase IQ batteries if you would rather scale capacity in smaller steps.

What a Powerwall Actually Does When the Power Goes Out

The practical difference between a battery and a generator shows up in the first ten seconds of an outage:

  • It switches over instantly and silently. There is no start-up delay, no engine noise and no fuel. Most households only learn the grid went down because a neighbor mentions it.
  • Whole-home or essential loads — the backup gateway decides what stays powered. We map your circuits honestly rather than promising everything runs on one unit.
  • Sizing is about surge, not just kWh — central air conditioning and well pumps (very common out here) draw hard on startup. That often means more than one Powerwall, or accepting that the well runs on a managed schedule during an outage. We will tell you which before you buy, not after.
  • It works every day, not just during outages — storing cheap or solar energy and discharging during expensive peak hours, which matters a great deal under California time-of-use rates.

Adding a Powerwall to Solar You Already Own

You do not need to replace your array to add storage, and you do not need to have bought it from us:

  • Retrofit onto an existing array of any brand — Powerwall is AC-coupled, so it pairs with solar regardless of who installed it or which inverters it uses.
  • Backup gateway and metering — the gateway handles islanding from the grid and gives the system the data it needs to manage charge and discharge correctly.
  • Interconnection and permitting — storage means a permit and a PG&E interconnection application. We handle both; it is part of the job.
  • Panel condition matters — older or full panels frequently need attention before a battery can be tied in correctly. See electrical panel upgrades. If the array itself is underperforming, start with solar repair & maintenance, or see solar panel installation for a new system.

Powerwall or a Generator? The Honest Comparison

We install both, so we have no reason to push you either way. A Powerwall is usually the better fit when you have solar or plan to, when outages are hours rather than days, when you want silence and zero maintenance, and when you want the system earning its keep year-round on time-of-use rates. A standby generator is usually the better fit when outages run multiple days — which does happen on rural foothills circuits — when you have heavy well pump or air conditioning loads, or when you do not have solar to recharge a battery mid-outage. Plenty of foothills properties are best served by both: the battery covers the common short outages silently, and the generator carries the multi-day events. See backup generator installation and Generac generator installation, and ask us for a straight recommendation for your property.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are you actually a Tesla Certified Installer? Yes — we install, commission and service Powerwall as a certified installer, and we are a licensed, insured California electrical contractor.
  • How many Powerwalls do I need? It depends on what you want to run and for how long. Air conditioning and well pumps drive the number up because of their startup surge. We size it from your actual loads and tell you plainly what one unit will and will not carry.
  • Can I add a Powerwall to solar I already have? Yes, and it does not matter who installed the array or what inverters it uses — Powerwall is AC-coupled and retrofits onto existing systems.
  • Will it run my whole house? Sometimes, and sometimes the right answer is essential circuits. We map that out honestly before you buy rather than after you are disappointed.
  • Do I need a permit? Yes — battery storage requires an electrical permit and a PG&E interconnection application. We handle both.
  • Does it help when the power is not out? Yes. Under California time-of-use rates, shifting stored energy into peak hours is where much of the day-to-day value comes from.
  • Powerwall or Enphase? Powerwall is a larger single unit with whole-home ambition; Enphase IQ batteries are modular and scale in smaller increments. We install both — and if you drive a compatible electric truck or SUV, GM Energy vehicle-to-home backup is worth comparing too, since you have largely already bought the battery. We will recommend based on your loads and budget.
